Inspired on Ian Brady’s (British Serial Killer, Myra Hindley accomplice) mug shot.
I want to make a quick point. I do not support, admire or agree with the heinous acts Brady and Hindley committed. In fact, I strongly appose any form of violent acts. That being said the way I happened to stumble across this photo was by over hearing the prime minister of England’s discontent about an image that appeared of artist’s Marcus Harvey interpretation of Myra Hindley’s mug shot, solely created by placing children’s hands all over the portrait. This image aired during the announcement of the next Olympics, which will be held in the UK. A quick montage was shot showing some of England’s historical landmarks, architecture, tourist attractions etc.
I then researched the history of this controversial figure and low and behold Brady’s picture appeared right next to his partner in crime.
I have mentioned this before. Even though I love seeing how good an artist can duplicate an image, regardless the subject matter, doing exact copies of portraits is not my thing because I always feel it’s just a reproduction of someone else’s vision. I feel like I’m cheating, or ran out of ideas. The problem is, when something speaks to me I can’t help but draw it. The original sketch was done on a piece of scratch paper with a faded out sharpie marker. I didn’t put much attention to detail because I wanted to finish it on Photoshop. Once I scanned it I started fiddling with some of the tools and filters to start making it look just like the actual photograph, but inspiration is a strange thing.
Not everything I start ends up looking how it originally came to me. I liked the fact that the drawing looked stuck in a stage between sketch and realistic. So it was kept like that, simply adding a darker more lost and careless look to the character. For that reason I titled it “Ian, Barely” because it resembles Brady, but not exactly.
